There is no denying it; stress is a part of our daily lives. We need to breathe more, be more mindful, keep a gratitude journal. It can almost feel, dare we say it, stressful?

TRE: The Lowdown

So that is why TRE (which stands for Tension/Trauma releasing exercises), under the kind and understanding instruction of Denise Stillie could be exactly what you need. We’re taught from a young age to keep it all in; keep your emotions close to your heart, and essentially, be emotionally constipated.

TRE: What to Expect

Denise talks me through a range of exercises, which aren’t about getting ab definition, but encouraging the body to induce tremoring in order to shake out stagnant stress, pain and tension. For the last part, you simply lie flat on your back with your feet touching and knees spread apart, and very very slowly bring your knees together until they start shaking. Shake for no more than 10-15 minutes, and for the first time it’s definitely essential to do it under guidance.

Lying on the floor uncontrollably shaking isn’t scary, it’s freeing and exciting. Once you have the tools you can practise alone, and promote a feeling of weightlessness and emotional catharsis when you need.
