Brunch Here: Mortimer House, FitzroviaBy Angelica Malin
Looking for a new brunch spot in Central London? Mortimer House is one of the most Instagram-friendly new brunch hotspots in London – the interiors are divine, the food is good and the coffee is strong. Here’s what you need to know:
Mortimer House Kitchen: The Lowdown
Mortimer House, a premium work and wellbeing destination in Fitzrovia, opened last Autumn. It’s pretty darn fancy – designed by renowned New York architects AvroKO and housed in a majestic six-storey art deco building. It’s a place to work, relax and create; Mortimer House provides amazing workspaces across multiple floors in an original 1930’s building with modern touches.
The restaurant is becoming one of the most popular next brunch spots in Central London; situated beneath Mortimer House, the Mediterranean brasserie provides all-day dining from breakfast through to dinner led by Head Chef Luca Unali who brings together his Italian and Israeli heritage. The interiors are gorgeous; the 90-cover restaurant features an open kitchen with chef’s counter and a light and airy conservatory.
Mortimer House Kitchen: The Food
It’s all very fancy and millennial here – expect to kickstart your day with a rice milk and Matcha shot chaser, before tucking into avocado shakshuka, an egg white omelette, or a homemade organic dragon fruit bowl. The breakfast menu is neatly divided into power snacks, bowls, avocado (yes, it has its own avocado menu), bakery, sides and eggs. In the bowls section, you’ll find everything from homemade granola with Greek yogurt to chia seed pudding with mango and banana. In the avocado section, there’s everything kind of avocado breakfast under the sun – avocado Royale, avocado with smoked ricotta on toast, avocado on sourdough. A veritable avocado feast.
And, of course, there’s all the eggs dishes you could imagine on a breakfast menu, including scrambled, Full English, omelettes, Benedict, Florentine, Royale. It’s basically a breakfast-lovers dream with a really impressive, wide-ranging menu. We went for the crushed avocado with ricotta on poppy seed bread, and a side of granola. My first comment would be that the portions are quite small for the price (£8 for avocado on toast, £7 for a side of berries), but the quality is definitely there – the avocado was fresh, the cheese tasty and the bread tasted homemade. A small, but satiating brunch dish. The homemade granola was great – full of nuts, seeds and a hint of cinnamon, the perfect sweet treat. We also had almond croissants which had just the right amount of filling, warm out of the oven, and totally beautiful. All in all, really good food, we just wanted more of it.
Mortimer House Kitchen: The Drinks
The breakfast drinks menu is deeply fun. Mainly because they’ve just got so many of them – juices, smoothies, shots, coffee, loose leaf tea, fancy hot chocolate. We decided to slowly make our way through the juice offering – starting with a watermelon juice (so good), a rice milk and matcha shot (good if you like the flavour of matcha) and a latte with coconut milk (they have a selection of 5, yes 5, dairy-free milks, vegans rejoice). One of the most fun breakfast drinks menus around, I say.
Mortimer House Kitchen: Our Verdict
I enjoyed Mortimer House; it felt a little bit like eating inside an Instagram filter. Everything is just so shiny, perfect and pretty in there – from the breakfast plates to the marble tables and matcha lattes – it’s all well-considered for a modern, millennial audience. If you want value for money, it’s probably not the place for you, but if it’s a taste of luxury you’re after, I’d recommend Mortimer House for your next brunch adventure in Central London.
