About Time: You Gave Stratford a GoBy Angelica Malin
Finally, a reason to go to Stratford. And it’s not that giant red helter-skelter in the middle of the now empty Olympic Park. In truth, getting out of Stratford tube I can’t help but feel the whole place resembles the outskirts of Dubai. What was once empty marshland is now a shrine to modern shopping and vast stadia.
Stratford’s New Cool
However all is not lost. Across the perfectly landscaped parks and over the river, is Number 90 a cool bar and restaurant on the river that nods to the original character of East London. With seating outside and a spacious laid-back interior this is the perfect place to come for a few drinks whilst you sit back and watch the rowers battle the British weather.
Every Tuesday, No.90 hosts a Burger and Movie Night that shows a selection of great films (Human Traffic was on in our visit) which you can watch whilst reclining in a leather sofa with a cocktail and a burger. We felt obliged to order their signature, and aptly named, “Time for Another” cocktail, featuring their own thyme-infused Gin. It was only bettered by the unsurprisingly colourful “Fruity Loops”.
Burger Heaven in Stratford
The burger was without doubt one of the best I have eaten. An eight-ounce Irish brisket and marrow burger, it comes with their own #90 secret sauce and is worth the trip alone. What’s more the tickets are free and the burger is just £10. For the rest of the week they have a full menu and if this burger is anything to go by that would be well worth checking out.
Only a few hundred metres from the giant Westfield shopping centre it’s great that this bar lives on, showcasing a tiny slice of the real Stratford. And if it were a choice between this Tuesday Movie Night, and an overpriced ticket in an underused shopping centre, I know where I’d rather be.
Number 90 is at 90 Wallis Rd, London, E9 5LN
